This standard specifies safety requirements for life jackets with performance level 100. It can be applied to life jackets used by adults, children and infants in sheltered or calm water or when users are fully clothed.
EN ISO 12402 is intended to provide guidance on the design and application of personal flotation devices (hereinafter PFDs) for persons engaged in activities in or near water, whether for work or leisure. PFDs manufactured, selected and maintained to this standard must provide a reasonable assurance of safety against drowning to a submerged person.
These devices provide face-up buoyancy with adequate levels of support for a variety of open and choppy water uses. Life jackets, when tested on swimwear wearers according to EN ISO 12402, have a distribution of buoyancy sufficient to return most wearers to a position where the muzzle is a defined freeboard above the water surface, even if the wearer is unconscious.
These devices should be comfortable for continuous use and provide lift without significant face-up ability to float the conscious user with the level of support marked on the device. Buoyancy aids will at least be suitable for sheltered waters, although higher performance levels may be suitable for some users in other waters.
This level is primarily intended for offshore use under extreme conditions. It is also valuable for those who wear clothing that traps air and may adversely affect the self-correcting capacity of the life jacket. It is designed to allow the user to glide in the correct position with the mouth and nose away from the surface.
