EN ISO 188 Rubber - Vulcanized or Thermoplastic - Accelerated Aging and Heat Resistance Tests

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 188 testing. EN ISO 188 specifies accelerated aging or heat resistance tests on vulcanized or thermoplastic rubbers. Two methods are given:

EN ISO 188 Rubber - Vulcanized or Thermoplastic - Accelerated Aging and Heat Resistance Tests

  • Method A: The air furnace method using a cellular furnace or a cabinet furnace with low air velocity and ventilation 3 to 10 times per hour;
  • Method B: Air oven method using a cabinet oven with forced air circulation through a fan and ventilation 3 to 10 times per hour.

Accelerated aging and heat resistance tests are designed to estimate rubber's resistance to deterioration over time. To this end, the rubber is subjected to controlled degradation effects for certain periods, after which the appropriate properties are measured and compared with the corresponding properties of the uncured rubber.

In accelerated aging, rubber is subjected to a test environment to produce the natural aging effect in a shorter time. When it comes to heat resistance tests, rubber is subjected to long periods at the same temperature as it will encounter in service.

The time, temperature and atmosphere to which the test pieces will be exposed and the choice of furnace type to be used will depend on the purpose of the test and the polymer type. In air furnace methods, deterioration is accelerated by raising the temperature. The degree of acceleration produced in this way varies from one rubber to another and from one property to another.

In the service application, the relevant physical properties should be used to determine the degree of deterioration, but in the absence of any indication of these properties, tensile strength, tensile at medium elongation, elongation at break (in accordance with ISO 37) are recommended.

The test pieces are subjected to controlled degradation with air at an elevated temperature and atmospheric pressure or at an elevated temperature and high oxygen pressure, after which the physical properties are measured and compared with those of the test pieces.
