EN ISO 8442-2 Materials and Objects in Contact with Foodstuffs - Standard Test Method for Cutlery and Tableware

This standard specifies material and performance requirements and test methods for table cutlery (knives, forks, spoons, carving utensils, ladles, children's cutlery and other serving items).

This standard is applicable to stainless steel cutlery and silver plated nickel silver or silver plated stainless steel cutlery. It does not cover cutlery made entirely of precious metals, aluminum, non-stainless steel or all nickel silver, and gold-plated or chrome-plated cutlery.

Based on ISO 8442, this standard is about performance and does not include requirements for design, size, finish type, blade flexibility, or similar features that are based on personal preference or can be instantly evaluated by the buyer. This standard stipulates silver plating thickness for each product, as opposed to conventional methods with an average of 12 or 24 items where some items may have a significantly lower silver plating thickness.

The cutting edge of sharpened table knives must be serrated or serrated or be sharpened to an interior angle of not greater than 60°. The cutting edges of the carving knife blade should be sharpened with an inclination angle of not greater than 40° and not thicker than 1 mm, measured 0,46 mm from the outside of the edge.
