ISO 21975 Test for Polymeric Nanocomposite Films for Food Packaging

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 21975 testing. This standard specifies the properties, including barrier properties, of polymeric nanocomposite films used to improve food packaging. Barrier properties include gas (oxygen), water vapor transmission and UV-Vis light transparency.

This standard also describes the relevant measurement methods. This standard neither addresses safety and health issues related to food packaging nor environmental aspects.

The rapid market growth of packages containing emerging nano-objects is due to the effects of these packages on improving food shelf life and reducing food waste. In addition, increasing exports and imports of food and food products are creating a growing demand for nano-enhanced packaging in the future.

This standard specifies the properties of polymeric nanocomposite films, including the barrier properties to be measured. It also recommends relevant measurement methods for features. This standard is expected to promote communication and mutual understanding of polymeric nanocomposites for food packaging applications between buyers and sellers.

The barrier properties of the polymeric nanocomposite film are sensitive to the size of the nanoobjects incorporated into the polymeric matrix. Nano objects are three-dimensional objects with different shapes. It is impossible to represent the size of the nano-object using a single number. Consequently, in most techniques the shape is assumed to be spherical, since a sphere is the shape that can be represented by a single number, its diameter.

A test sample is taken from the nano-object raw material sample for size and size distribution measurements and a suspension is prepared. The average size of a nanoobject should be measured using an appropriate measurement method and, if possible, specifying whether the nanoobject being measured is primary or secondary (agglomerated). Measurement results should be expressed in nm.
