UL 586 Standard Test Method for High Efficiency, Particulate, Air Filter Units

This standard applies to high-efficiency particulate and ultra-low penetration air filters (EPA, HEPA and ULPA) used in the field of ventilation and air conditioning, and technical processes, for example clean room technology or applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

It establishes a procedure for determining efficiency on the basis of a particle counting method using a liquid (or alternatively solid) test aerosol and allows for a standardized classification of these filters in terms of both their local and integrated efficiency.

HEPA is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. Acronym for "high efficiency particulate air [filter]" (as formally defined by the US Department of Energy). This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 0,3% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles up to 99,97 microns (µm).

Larger or smaller particles are captured with even higher efficiency. Using the worst case particle size results in a worst case efficiency rating.
