BS 903-A9 Methods for Testing Vulcanized Rubber Part A9: Determination of Abrasion Resistance - Standard Test for Akron and Taber Methods

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of BS 903-A9 testing. This section of BS 903 describes two methods (Method A: Akron method and Method B: Taber method) for determining the abrasion resistance of rubber by comparing the wear of the tested rubber with the wear of a standard rubber under the same conditions.

Wear is the loss of material from the effect of friction on a surface. Wear resistance of rubbers is one of its most important technological features. However, the analysis of wear processes and measurement under laboratory conditions and in service has proven to be a difficult problem.

It is often necessary to achieve significant wear in a short time to have measurable mass losses when performing laboratory tests. This has led to tests based on the use of corundum, sharp abrasive surfaces of high loads and high shear rates, but these conditions are uncharacteristic for service. For example, wear in service can occur not only on sharp rough surfaces, but also on mechanically smooth surfaces such as glass or polished metal.

The flat end of a cylindrical test piece is abraded against the surface of a rotating drum covered with an abrasive cloth, while the test piece is passed from one end of the drum to the other to reduce soiling of the fabric.

A rotating disk-shaped test piece is abraded against an abrasive wheel under a certain load, the planes of the test piece and the wheel are inclined at an angle. Dust is applied if necessary during testing to prevent the abrasive disc from becoming clogged with rubber debris.
