EN 14210 Surfactants - Standard Test for Determination of Interfacial Tension of Solutions of Surfactants by the Stirrup or Ring Method

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 14210 testing. This European standard specifies test methods for determining the interfacial tension in the range of 4 mN/m to 50 mN/m between two immiscible liquids, which may also be free of surfactants. It is particularly suitable for determining the interfacial tension between water or aqueous solutions and water-immiscible organic liquids.

The sample container for the tested liquid should be a glass container suitable for use in a thermostat. It shall have sufficient capacity for the liquid to be protected against evaporation if necessary. The temperature of the gas phase above the liquid will also be made in such a way that it can be kept constant by the thermostat. There is no need to use a thermostat to measure at room temperature. The sample container shall consist of a cylindrical glass container with an inside diameter of at least 45 mm for use with the ring method or the stirrup method.

Carefully clean glass containers first by thorough pre-cleaning using a suitable solvent, eg propan-2-ol or propanone. Then rinse and dry repeatedly with fresh double-distilled water. Clean and rinse the stirrups or rings in the same way and then heat briefly until incandescent in a methanol or ethanol flame (the latter is preferable as it has a lower vapor pressure and higher flash point), preferably in a natural flame without light.

The temperature of liquids should be kept constant to the nearest 0,5°C during measurement. The measurement temperature chosen should be suitable for the purpose of the particular test. Measurements at room temperature show the least problems.

Interfacial tension changes with time and can be affected by the chemical makeup of a surfactant, its concentration, whether it is dissolved in the upper or lower phase, its adsorption capacity, and the rate of adsorption during change. Therefore, it is not possible to determine a suitable time to start measurements.

Therefore, various measurements of the interface tension as a function of time and thus the age of the interface must be made. After a period characteristic for each system, no further change in the interface tension is observed as an equilibrium state is established. It is advantageous to use commercially available automatic tensiometers to perform such measurements.
