EN 1717 General Requirements for Protection Against Pollution of Drinking Water in Water Installations and Devices to Prevent Pollution by Backflow

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 1717 testing. This standard addresses the means to be used to prevent contamination of drinking water in buildings and the general requirements for protection devices to prevent contamination by backflow. The hygiene protection features of this standard apply to all standards for systems or devices connected to a special supply system for water intended for human consumption. This standard specifies the minimum requirements for product standards of protection units. Product standards are used to detail product specifications.

EN 1717 General Requirements for Protection Against Pollution of Drinking Water in Water Installations and Devices to Prevent Pollution by Backflow

The plumbing installations described in EN 806 shall not be liable to contaminate the public or private drinking water supply system with residual substances, harmful water or any undesirable substance, due to their design or construction.

In case of mixing of public drinking water with any other water source, the public water supply will be protected by an unrestricted air gap. Non-potable or suspicious water distribution network will be separated and all plumbing will be marked (eg different colored pipes). Non-potable or questionable water faucets will have signs with clearly visible warning signs.

In a drinking water installation, no liquid other than drinking water (gas, compressed air, ventilation line, steam, chemicals, water used in heating equipment, recycling water, drainage or run-off water, waste water, etc.) shall be carried.

If it is considered that any pollutant can enter the drinking water installation through the protection device (eg air gap, air inlet) within the scope of the envisaged work, the relevant protection measures will be provided.

Water stagnation in systems can result in deterioration of water quality due to a significant concentration of dissolved substances or suspended matter or bacterial growth. The level of degradation depends on the materials used, water quality, temperature (eg pipes in boiler rooms) and stagnation time.

Pipes used infrequently or for short periods should be capped after use and flushed before being put back into service. Pipes that are no longer used must be separated from the drinking water system.

Inadequate or improper maintenance of drinking water installations, including backflow protection devices, can result in deterioration of water quality. Regular maintenance of the protection units will be carried out. Their proper operation should be checked regularly in accordance with national or local regulations.
