EN 927-3 Paints and Varnishes, Coating Materials and Coating Systems for Outdoor Wood, Part 3: Natural Aging Test

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 927-3 standard. This standard specifies a natural aging test for exterior wood cladding systems designed primarily for the decoration and protection of planed and sawn wood.

The test provides a way to evaluate the performance of a wood coating system during outdoor exposure. It forms the basis of the performance specification in accordance with EN 927-2. It also makes it easy to compare the performance of coating systems on different surfaces, including wood species or other wood modifications.

The resistance to natural wear of the tested coating system applied to a particular wood substrate is evaluated. Durability is assessed by identifying changes in the decorative and protective properties of coatings after 12 months of exposure.

The reference test substrate is Pinus sylvestris (European alder or Scots pine, later referred to as pine) for faster comparative results. The sapwood, usually found in joinery lumber, was chosen as the substrate reference rather than the heartwood, because paint failure is more evident in the former. However, heartwood and other grain orientations can be used as an alternative.
