ISO 4628-7 Paints and Varnishes - Evaluation of Deterioration of Coatings - Evaluation of Chalking Degree by Velvet Method

ISO 4628-7 specifies a suitable method for grading the degree of chalking, particularly on white or colored exterior coatings and coating systems on rough surfaces.

The specified test method can also be used to evaluate the degree of chalking of coatings and coating systems on smooth surfaces, but the method specified in ISO 4628‑6 is preferred for this purpose.

The test method can be applied to coatings and coating systems on mineral substrates such as fiber cement, brick, concrete and plasters, regardless of the nature of the surface. The method can be used quite effectively by experienced operators and is recommended for both laboratory use and on-site evaluation.

Where a reference to this test method is included in the specification, the test conditions (i.e. weather exposure method and substrate) should be agreed upon between the parties involved.

The method described in this section of ISO 4628 is a relative ranking method and is therefore not suitable for use in agreements between parties.
