ISO 8124-10 Safety of Toys - Part 10: Standard Test Method for Experiment Sets for Chemistry and Related Activities

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 8124-10 testing. This standard specifies the requirements for the maximum amount and, in some cases, the maximum concentration of certain substances and mixtures used in test sets for chemistry and related activities.

ISO 8124-10 Safety of Toys - Part 10: Standard Test Method for Experiment Sets for Chemistry and Related Activities

These substances and mixtures are:

  • Those classified as hazardous by the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS);
  • Substances and mixtures which, if used in excessive amounts, may harm the health of children and are not classified as dangerous by GHS; And
  • Other chemicals and mixtures supplied with the test set.

This standard applies to test sets for chemistry and related activities, including crystal growth sets, carbon dioxide generating sets, and supplementary sets. It also covers chemical test sets containing one or more chemicals or mixtures classified as hazardous according to GHS in the fields of mineralogy, biology, physics, microscopy and environmental science. This standard also specifies requirements for marking, list of ingredients, instructions for use, eye protection and equipment intended to perform tests.

This standard aims to reduce risks and health hazards to children if test kits containing chemical experiments are used as intended or in a predictable manner, taking into account the behavior of children.

During the use of these test sets, hazards should be kept to a minimum by providing appropriate information to make the experiments safe and controllable. Therefore, this standard specifies warning statements and instructions for use with test sets.

As a general rule, experiment sets are designed and manufactured for children of certain ages. Their properties are associated with the age and level of development of children, and their use requires certain abilities. That's why age requirements are given. The requirements of this standard do not exempt parents or caregivers from their responsibility to keep an eye on a child performing experiments. On the contrary, the use of these sets requires close adult supervision.

Products covered by this standard may be subject to legal requirements specific to the jurisdiction in which they are sold, and compliance with the requirements in this document cannot be relied upon to ensure compliance.
