Telecommunications central offices and similar types of facilities can be exposed to the effects of High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP).
HEMP is the byproduct of a nuclear explosion at high altitude (i.e. above the atmosphere). Such an impact could cause extensive disruption and possibly disablement of unprotected telecommunications facilities within line of sight of the nuclear device explosion point(s).
The purpose of this standard is to provide additional mitigation measures that will significantly increase the protection of critical components of the public telecommunications network if exposed to the effects of HEMP. This standard is intended as a guide for designers of such facilities in the application of basic HEMP safeguards to head offices and similar types of facilities that may be specifically designated under government contract to take such measures.
Such tests are used to directly determine the effect of flame on working or non-operating equipment. Tested devices can range from fuel or hydraulic lines, pumps or actuators for aircraft engines, to telecommunications central office network equipment. Often testing is combined with additional factors such as vibration, pressure, gas and air flow, and temperature variations, depending on official specifications and your individual requirements.
