This standard specifies methods for determining the compression set properties of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers at ambient, high or low temperatures.

The methods aim to measure the ability of rubbers with hardness in the range of 10 IRHD to 95 IRHD to retain their elastic properties at certain temperatures after prolonged compression at constant stress under one of the described sets of alternative conditions.

A test piece of known thickness is compressed to a defined strain at standard temperature, which is then held constant for a specified period of time at a fixed standard or elevated temperature. After the strain is released and the test piece is allowed to recover at standard temperature for a certain period of time, the thickness of the test piece is measured again.
