CPSC staff have determined that using an appropriate combination of extraction and analysis methods presented here is sufficient to determine the concentration of eight regulated phthalates in most consumer products.
Adjustments may be necessary for products made from certain materials and this should be based on sound knowledge of chemistry and materials science as well as solvents suitable for the materials. The usual approach is to dissolve the sample completely in tetrahydrofuran, precipitate any dissolved polymers with a second solvent, and then analyze it by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
Prior to analysis, each piece of plasticized component should be cut into small pieces (size not larger than 2 mm) or ground into a representative powder. Each cut/milled piece of plasticized component shall be considered as a sample for testing.
The testing laboratory will determine how many replicates are required to meet quality assurance requirements. Prepare the LRB at the same time as the samples. Add benzyl benzoate directly to the precipitation solvent (choice of acetonitrile or hexane) to achieve a concentration of 30 µg/mL for use as an internal standard.
