DIN 53860 appears to be a standard for textile testing, specifically testing the swelling tendency of textile fabrics using elbow testing and static strain.
The tendency of textile fabrics to swell refers to their tendency to stretch or deform under certain conditions. As mentioned, elbow testing may involve applying a static stress to the fabric, possibly in the form of bending or folding, to evaluate its resistance to swelling or deformation.
The sample, which is glued together in the shape of an arm, is pulled over the testing device that imitates the arm, the forearm is bent and exposed to static tension for 2 hours. After lowering the forearm and a 12-minute recovery period, the measurement sample is removed from the arm and pulled over the initially vertical measuring tube. After the melt tube is placed in a horizontal position, the shadow of the sample is projected onto a screen using an illumination device, and the height of both the bulging and unloaded part of the sample is read on this device.
At least 5 separate tests are performed for the textile fabric to be tested. If a certain confidence interval is determined for the mean and this cannot be reached when testing with 5 separate values, the first result should be used to calculate additional test coverage. If necessary, any existing inhomogeneity in the test batch should be taken into account.
