This standard specifies general principles for determining the fire resistance of various structural members when subjected to standard fire exposure conditions. The principle contained in all European standards regarding fire resistance testing is specified in this test method where the characteristics and procedures of the test are common to all specific test methods, for example the temperature/time curve.
The test results obtained may be directly applicable to other similar elements or variations of the element under test. The extent to which this practice is allowed depends directly on the application area of the test result. This is constrained by providing rules that limit variation from the sample tested without further evaluation. Rules for determining allowable variations are given in each specific test method.
Variations other than those permitted by direct application are within the scope of extended application of test results. This is due to the design and performance of a particular product being thoroughly examined in tests by a recognized authority.
The time the element tested satisfies certain criteria, as modified by direct or extended field of application, will allow for subsequent classification.
