This European standard is a product specification that gives performance requirements for fire safety cabinets to be used for the storage of flammable liquids in laboratories.
Applies to cabinets that are free-standing, fixed to the wall or mounted on wheels or casters. It does not apply to brick enclosures or recessed storage rooms. This European standard does not apply to cabinets that do not take their weight from the base.
Requirements for cabinet construction and its capacity to withstand external fire conditions are given. A classification of cabinets is given according to the level of fire resistance offered and a type test is included that makes use of already existing fire resistance tests, such as those given in ISO 834-1 and EN 1363-1. The tests described in this European standard are type tests.
This European standard describes the design and testing criteria for safety cabinets to be used in laboratories to store flammable liquids in closed containers at normal room temperatures.
Testing the cabinet under fire conditions is a normative part of the standard and the procedures and interpretation of the tests are detailed. Fire testing provides fire protection in four categories. In practice, the degree of fire protection allows the user, depending on individual conditions, to select a cabinet that will allow sufficient time for personnel to leave and allow firefighters to enter the laboratory before stored combustible materials turn into a possible situation.
In the case of flammable materials with auto-ignition temperatures below 200°C or with high vapor pressures at room temperature, care should be taken when determining the appropriate cabinet fire rating. Expert advice should be sought when storing such flammable materials.
