The useful range of application depends on the availability of suitable pyrometric reference cones. In the temperature range 1500°C to 1800°C, pyrometric reference cones specified in EN 993-13 are suitable. Because pyrometric reference cones are manufactured primarily to predict the effect of temperature on siliceous, low-alumina fireworks and fireworks products, results on materials other than these may be inconclusive.
Test pieces of refractory materials or products are heated next to pyrometric reference cones of known refractoriness under certain conditions and their behavior is compared with that of the reference cones.
The test involves heating the test piece of refractory product together with a series of pyrometric cones, each made of a different refractory material with a specific melting point. The temperature at which the first cone begins to deform is noted, and this temperature is known as the pyrometric cone equivalent (PCE) of the refractory product.
The PCE of a refractory product is an important parameter that helps determine its suitability for certain applications such as furnaces or furnaces. The higher the PCE of a refractory product, the more resistant it is to high temperatures.
