EN ISO 12945-3 describes a method for determining the resistance of textile fabrics to pilling, pilling and dulling using a random drum pilling tester. This method can be applied to most woven and knitted fabrics, including pile fabrics (fleece, batting fabrics). This method cannot be applied to fabrics that cannot roll freely.
Pills form when the fibers on the fabric surface "tangle" and become entangled during wear. Such surface degradation is generally undesirable, but the consumer's degree of tolerance for a given level of pilling will depend on the type of garment and the end use of the fabric.

The rates of these processes depend on the fiber, yarn and fabric properties. Extreme examples include fabrics containing strong fibers versus fabrics containing weak fibers. A result of the strong fiber is a rate of pill formation that exceeds the rate of attrition. This results in increased pilling along with increased wear.
In weak fibers, the rate of pill formation competes with the rate of wear. This will cause pilling to fluctuate as wear increases. There are other structures in which wear of the surface fibers occurs before agglomerate formation. Each of these examples illustrates the complexity of evaluating surface variation on different types of fabric.
