EN ISO 14934-4 Fire Tests - Calibration and Use of Heat Flow Meters - Part 4: Guide to the Use of Heat Flow Meters in Fire Tests

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 14934-4 testing. EN ISO 14934-4 provides guidance on the use of heat flow meters in fire testing applications, including the definition and operating principles of common heat flow meters, and methods for their selection and maintenance. The guide can also be applied to measure heat flow from radiant panels and other major heat sources, used to simulate heat flow from a fire. Applicable for all common testing purposes when measuring heat flow from radiant sources.

EN ISO 14934-4 also provides the basic theory and working principles of heat flux meters and methods for the selection, use and maintenance of heat flux meters. In particular, it is aimed to apply heat flux meters in fire tests and experimental studies of fire research, but also in boiler research, combustion processes, etc. it can also serve as a guide for other research applications.

Instruments that measure the transient temperature of a solid body with known mass and heat capacity to understand heat flow (slug calorimeter type) are not covered by EN ISO 14934-4.

The heat flux meter is an instrument that measures the radiant and convective heat transferred from the fire environment to a sensing element. In practice, heat flux is most commonly measured with Schmidt-Boelter (thermopil) or Gardon (foil) type total heat flux meters. Although there are a wide variety of heat flow meter designs, a typical design consists of a thermopile sensor mounted on a water-cooled metal housing. The body acts as a constant temperature heat sink. The thermopile sensor typically has an almost black surface, which is assumed to absorb all incoming radiation or given an emission value.
