This standard specifies a method for determining the short-term coefficient of liquid water absorption by partial immersion without a temperature gradient.
This standard is intended to evaluate the rate of water absorption with insulators and other normally protected materials, through capillary action from continuous or heavy rain during on-site storage or construction. The method is suitable for plasters or coatings that are normally tested in conjunction with the substrate on which they are mounted.
It is not intended to assess water absorption by materials used underwater or in general contact with saturated ground where a total immersion test is more appropriate.
Methods are currently being developed in research laboratories to measure capillary transport and measure related coefficients. Currently, however, these include complex measurement techniques such as gamma ray and neutron absorption or Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, along with sophisticated mathematical methods to analyze the results. Comparisons between laboratories showed that more work is needed to develop standard techniques.
Water absorption by partial immersion is determined by measuring the change in mass of the test sample whose bottom surface is in contact with water, usually over a period of at least 24 hours. The water that adheres to the surface and is not absorbed by the product is completely removed before weighing the sample, for example by blotting it with a sponge.
Test specimens will be cut to represent the entire material and not include product edges. In the case of materials known to be non-isotropic, test sample sets will be prepared in all directions of potential use of the material.
