EN ISO 2418 Leather - Chemical - Physical - Mechanical and Fastness Tests - Location and Preparation of Samples for Testing

It can be applied to all types of leather obtained from mammals, regardless of the tanning method used. It is not applied to skins from birds, fish, reptiles or fur.

The areas selected for laboratory samples should be free of obvious defects such as scratches or cuts. The sampling procedures described have been established to enable physical, color fastness and chemical testing.

Test results of samples taken from different departments may differ significantly. Therefore, in addition to the impossibility of uniformly determining cut sizes, it is preferable to take samples from the whole skin and sides.

If the hide is halved or cut into pieces and then dried in a stenter dryer or in a drying process that creates tension at the edges of the hide, the distance of the sampling areas from the edges of the hide should be increased from 50 mm to 50 mm.
