An enameled sample is attacked by an alkaline liquid under certain temperature and time conditions. The solution is not mixed during the test. The mass loss is determined and used to calculate the mass loss rate per unit area and, if necessary, the corrosion rate.
The most important parameters affecting the aqueous corrosion of enamel are enamel quality, temperature and pH value. Inhibitory effects from the limited solubility of silica may also contribute.
For some aqueous solutions, the attack on the enamel proceeds linearly through the corrosion time; for other aqueous solutions, the attack on the enamel proceeds in a logarithmic fashion throughout the corrosion time.
