EN ISO 4997 Standard Test Method for Cold Reduced Carbon Steel Plate in Structural Quality

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 4997 testing. EN ISO 4997 applies to cold reduced carbon steel sheets of structural quality, generally without the use of microalloying elements, in grades CR220, CR250, CR320 and CH550. The product is designed for structures involving bolting, riveting and welding. It is often used in the delivered condition for fabrication purposes such as bending, forming and welding.

EN ISO 4997 Standard Test Method for Cold Reduced Carbon Steel Plate in Structural Quality

EN ISO 4997 does not cover steels designated as commercial grade or drawing grades (covered by ISO 3574), cold reduced carbon steel sheet according to hardness requirements (covered by ISO 5954), higher strength cold reduced steel sheet with improved formability.

Unless otherwise agreed by the parties concerned, the processes used in the making of the steel and in the production of cold reduced sheet are left to the discretion of the manufacturer. Upon request, the buyer will be informed about the steel production process used.

This product is normally suitable for welding if suitable welding conditions are selected. When the mass fraction of carbon exceeds 0,15%, spot welding becomes increasingly difficult. This grade is not recommended for welding as the heat of welding can have a significant effect on reducing the strength of the CH550 grade.

It is desirable that the cold reduced steel sheet be identified by the name of the part or the intended application to align with the quality specified for fabrication. Proper identification of the part may include visual inspection, prints or description, or a combination of these.

Cold-reduced steel sheet is normally produced with a matte finish with a dull appearance, which is suitable for ordinary decorative painting but not recommended for electroplating. When the chilled steel sheet is deformed during fabrication, local areas may be roughened to some extent and hand finishing may be required in such affected parts of the part to prepare the surface for the intended application.

Surface roughness ranges for specific end uses can be determined by agreement at the time of inquiry and order. The products may be required for hot dip plating or electroplating process or metallic plating with organic plating or other plating. When such a coating is requested, it will be specified at the time of ordering.

As a deterrent against rust, a layer of oil is usually applied to the product. The oil is not intended as drawing or forming oil and should be easily removed using degreasing chemicals. The product can be ordered oil-free if required, in which case the supplier's liability is limited if oxidation occurs.
