ISO 1268-9 specifies a method for preparing test plates by compression molding of reinforced thermoplastic sheet (GMT/STC) to be used in the preparation of test specimens to determine the mechanical and physical properties of the laminate.
The proposed method can be applied to laminates made from a thermoplastic matrix reinforced with glass, carbon, aramid or other reinforcing fibers, alone or in combination and in any form suitable for compression molding.
This method is based on a compression-molding procedure using a normal commercial press, a plate die, and molding conditions recommended by the supplier of the GMT/STC material. The corresponding material, cut to the required size and heated to the molding temperature, is placed in the center of the mold cavity. The mold is closed and the material is allowed to flow and solidify under pressure.
It is absolutely necessary to fill the void completely. The method can still be used for materials that do not flow in the mold, but modifications to the procedure are required.
The method can be used for all types of GMT/STC material, regardless of the type of thermoplastic polymer used or the type and nature of the reinforcement, provided the material is suitable for compression molding. The method is designed for materials that flow during the molding process. Materials that do not flow during the molding process can be molded with this method, but care should be taken to use the method given in ISO 1268-4.
If fumes appear on the material during heating, this is an indication of thermo-oxidative degradation and should be avoided. Material that appears to emit smoke during heating should not be used for molding test plates. Alternatively, evidence of smoking may indicate a malfunction in the heating equipment.
