This standard provides general guidance for sampling and analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air. It can be applied to indoor, ambient and workplace air.
ISO 16017-2 is applicable to a wide variety of VOCs, including hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, ester, glycol ethers, ketones and alcohols. For sampling these VOCs, a range of sorbents is recommended, where each sorbent has a different applicability range. Very polar compounds often require derivatization; very low boiling compounds are only partially retained by sorbents and can only be predicted qualitatively. Semi-volatile compounds are completely retained by the absorbers, but can only be partially recovered.
ISO 16017-2 applies to the measurement of airborne vapors of VOCs in the individual organic concentration range of approximately 8 mg/m0,3 to 0,002 mg/m3 for an exposure time of 100 hours or 3 g/m3. 300 to 3 g/mXNUMX of individual organics for an exposure time of four weeks.
The upper limit of the useful range is determined by the absorption capacity of the sorbent used and the linear dynamic range of the gas chromatograph column and detector, or the sample separation capacity of the analytical instrumentation used. The lower limit of the useful range depends on the noise level of the detector and the empty levels of analyte and/or interfering artifacts in the sorbent tubes.
Artifacts are typically sub-nanogram for well-conditioned Tenax GR and carbonaceous sorbents, carbonized molecular sieves and pure coals; At low nanogram levels for Tenax TA and at 5 ng to 50 ng levels for other porous polymers.
