ISO 7240-29 specifies requirements, test methods and performance criteria for visible spectrum video fire detectors (VFDs) for use in fire detection and alarm systems installed in and around buildings.
ISO 7240-29 can be used for guidance purposes only for testing other types of VFDs operating on different principles. Detectors developed to protect certain risks with special features are outside the scope of ISO 7240-29.
The video fire detection system differs from some point type detectors in that the detection is carried out remotely from the actual fire and therefore does not involve sensor contact with combustion products.
Fire detection is based on mathematical algorithm analysis of a video image. The video image from a camera can be processed by software to determine the presence of smoke or flame (depending on the system's capacity) visible in the image.
Video fire detectors consist of three elements: a sensor, an image processor, and the transmission path between the sensor and the image processor. The elements may be in a single cabinet, or the sensor and processor may be in separate cabinets interconnected by a transmission path.
