UL 263 UL Standard for Safety Fire Testing of Building Construction and Materials

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of UL 263 standard. These fire tests are applicable to combinations of wall units and composite combinations of structural materials for buildings, including load-bearing and other walls and partitions.

UL 263 UL Standard for Safety Fire Testing of Building Construction and Materials

Classifications for building construction and materials are intended to record performance over the period of fire exposure and are not intended to be interpreted as determining their acceptability for use after exposure to fire.

These requirements are intended to assess the length of time that device types will contain a fire or maintain their structural integrity, or both, depending on the type of device involved, during a predetermined test exposure. The test evaluates the resistance of the assembly to heat and, in some cases, to a hose flow when carrying an applied load, if the assembly is load bearing.

Under these requirements, a sample is subjected to a standardized fire exposure, which is controlled to achieve certain temperatures for a specified period of time. In some cases, a standard fire hose flow may be applied following fire exposure.

This exposure alone may not represent all fire conditions; conditions, the amount, nature and distribution of the fire load, ventilation, compartment size and configuration, and changes in the compartment's heat sink properties. These requirements provide a relative measure of the fire performance of comparable assemblies under these specified fire exposure conditions.

These requirements cover the following measurements and determinations during test exposure:

  • Measurement of conduction through the installation of heat and gases to ignite cotton waste in walls, partitions, floors and roofs;
  • Measurement of load-bearing ability of load-bearing elements in wall, partition, floor and roof assemblies;
  • Measuring the load-bearing ability of individual load-bearing assemblies, such as beams and columns, taking into account constrained or unrestricted end support conditions;

The results of these tests represent a factor in evaluating the fire performance of building construction and assemblies. These requirements prescribe a standardized fire exposure to compare the performance of building construction assemblies. Application of these test results to predict the performance of actual building construction requires careful consideration of test conditions.
