UL 555 Test for Safety Fire Dampers

Fire dampers are evaluated for use in the following ways:

• Fire Dampers for Static Systems – For HVAC systems that automatically shut down in case of fire or for air transfer openings in walls or partitions,
• Fire Dampers for Dynamic Systems – For HVAC systems activated in the event of a fire,
• Combined Fire and Smoke Dampers – For locations in HVAC systems where one fire damper and one smoke damper are required in one location or
• Aisle Dampers – In HVAC Systems, where air ducts enter or terminate in openings in ceilings, they are used in interior corridors when permitted by the competent authority.

Under these requirements, a fire damper is subjected to a controlled standard fire exposure to reach certain temperatures for a specified period of time followed by a specified standard hose flow. This exposure alone does not represent all fire conditions; conditions vary with the amount, nature and distribution of the fire load, ventilation, compartment size and configuration, and changes in the compartment's heat sink properties. These requirements provide a relative measure of the fire performance of fire damper assemblies under these specified fire exposure conditions. Any change from the structure or conditions tested, such as installation method and materials, has the potential to significantly alter the performance characteristics of the fire damper assembly.

Fire dampers for static systems (no air flow through the damper) are intended to close automatically when heat is detected by a heat sensitive device.

Within these requirements, combined fire and smoke dampers, corridor dampers and fire dampers for dynamic systems are subjected to standardized heat and airflow conditions and evaluated for dynamic shutdown under these conditions.
