This standard specifies a procedure for measuring the fire properties of bulkhead, ceiling and deck finishing materials as a basis for characterizing their flammability and therefore their suitability for use in marine construction.
Test results relate only to the behavior of test samples of a product under certain test conditions; They are not intended to be the sole criteria for assessing the potential fire hazard of the product in use.
IMO Resolution A-653 Test Method
This test provides methods for evaluating the flammability properties of 155 mm x 800 mm samples in the vertical direction. The samples are exposed to a graduated radiant flux field provided by a gas powered radiant panel. Means are provided to monitor the ignition, propagation and extinction times of the flame along the length of the sample and to measure the compensated millivolt signal of the flue gas thermocouples as combustion progresses. Experimental results are reported for the following aspects: heat of ignition, heat of sustained combustion, critical flux in quenching, and heat release of the sample during combustion.
