ISO 16186 Footwear - Potentially Critical Substances in Footwear and Footwear Components, Determination of Dimethyl Fumarate (DMFU)

This standard specifies a method for the determination of dimethyl fumarate (DMFU) content by gas chromatography with single quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS).

This standard applies to all types of shoes and shoe components, excluding metal parts.

Dimethyl fumarate (DMFU) has been found to be sensitizing at very low concentrations and produces diffuse, prominent eczema that is difficult to treat. The sample is extracted using acetone in an ultrasonic bath at 60°C.

Two different procedures can be used in this step, depending on the material being tested:

• The "standard procedure" without purification and concentration of the extracted solution can be used for samples that yield a simple chromatogram, for example textile shoe components;
• With the purification and concentration of the extract, the "complex matrix procedure" can be used for samples with a complex matrix effect, such as leather.

An aliquot of the extract is analyzed using a gas chromatography with single quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS).
