Response to ISO 5658 Fire Tests - Spread of Flame - Lateral Spread on Buildings and Transport Products in Vertical Configuration

ISO 5658 specifies a test method for measuring the lateral spread of flame along the surface of a vertically oriented product sample. ISO 5658 provides data suitable for comparing the performance of essentially flat materials, composites or assemblies used primarily as exposed surfaces of walls in buildings, transportation vehicles such as ships and trains. Some profiled products (such as pipes) can also be tested under specified mounting and fixing conditions.

ISO 5658 applies to the measurement and description of properties of materials, products or assemblies in response to radiated heat in the presence of a pilot flame under controlled laboratory conditions.

ISO 5658 is not suitable for use alone to identify or assess the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products or assemblies under actual fire conditions.

ISO 5658 Test Method

The sample is placed in the sample holder along with a substrate. During testing it is positioned vertically and exposed to heat radiation from a radiation panel. The test is done with a pilot flame. The time is recorded when the sample is ignited and the flame reaches each of the 50 mm stations along the sample centerline. Other parameters of note are time to exit the flame front from the centerline flame front, burnt length, and the formation of any burning droplets.
