ISO 5659 Reaction to Fire Standards

The fire performance of a material is an extremely important factor in ensuring public safety and evacuation in the event of a fire. Therefore, reaction to fire testing is a mandatory requirement of technical codes, standards and regulations of the construction and transportation industries.

In Europe, building materials must be tested by classifying a product according to its response to fire (flammability, smoke opacity and toxicity, etc.). In the field of vehicles and transportation systems (automotive, rail, marine or aerospace), materials must be tested against specific standards and requirements set by the industry or manufacturer (OEM) in question.

ISO 5659-1 - Guide to Optical Density Testing:

This part of ISO 5659 forms Part 5659 of ISO 1. Part 2 of this standard describes a static (or cumulative) single-chamber test procedure. Currently, the scope of this manual is limited to the test procedure described in chapter 2.

ISO 5659-2 - Determination of Optical Density by Single Chamber Test:

This part of ISO 5659 covers a method for measuring smoke production from the exposed surface of samples of materials or composites. It is particularly applicable to specimens which, when placed in a horizontal orientation, have a flat surface and a thickness not exceeding 25 mm, and are exposed to the specified degrees of heat radiation in a closed cabinet whether or not a pilot flame is applied. This test method is valid for all plastics.
