CEN TS 16165 Determination of Slip Resistance of Pedestrian Surfaces - Standard Test for Evaluation Methods

This standard describes the most widely used test methods in Europe for the determination of the slip resistance of floors in the most common situations encountered by pedestrians.

After the tested pedestrian surface material is continuously covered with water containing a wetting agent, two barefoot test personnel are used to determine the acceptance angle. Each in turn, facing downhill and standing upright, moves back and forth across the test surface as they increase the angles of inclination, until the safe walking limit is reached and a slip occurs. The resulting mean acceptance angle is used to express the degree of slip resistance. Subjective effects on the acceptance angle are limited by a calibration procedure.

The slope of the sloping walkway surface will be calibrated annually and checked periodically. Verification of data produced by test personnel should be done daily prior to testing. The latter will be achieved using a suitable set of standardized surfaces.
