EN 12132-1 Feather and Down - Methods for Testing the Feather Resistant Properties of Fabrics - Part 1: Friction Testing

This standard specifies a method for determining down or feather penetration from the primary tick fabric of a sample containing down or down fill using a scrubbing apparatus.

A pillow of certain sizes is made from the fabric to be tested for its down-proof properties and filled with a certain amount of down material or mixtures. The cushion is mounted on an apparatus and is subjected to a certain number of frictions. The number of down or feather particles that pass through or come out of the primary tick fabric is counted.

At least two test samples of (140 ± 5) mm 3 (420 ± 10) mm each are taken from the fabric. One sample is taken with its long side in the warp direction and the other in the weft direction. Two test pads are sewn from these samples (with lock stitches). The stitch length in the seam is 1 mm.

With the back outward, fold the fabric in the middle parallel to the short edge and sew the long edge 10 mm from the edge; then turn it over so that the back is inside.

The filler particles in the plastic bag will be counted. The test pad is placed under a suitable light source and the number of visible protruding particles >2 mm is counted. If the number of filler particles in the plastic bag and the number of filler particles protruding from the pillow is more than 50, the count is stopped.
