The mass of the mat is determined together with the slip resistance properties of the base of the mat. This is the energy absorbed by the measured friction, which is allowed to slide on the sole for a certain distance, and is measured by an aluminum foot (slider) attached to the arm of a pendulum.

The mass of the pointer should not exceed 85 g and the friction in the pointer mechanism must be adjustable so that the outward end of a 300 mm long needle can rest while the pendulum swings freely from a horizontal position.

3 The slider shall consist of an aluminum block 76 mm wide, 24 mm deep and 6 mm thick, held on a stable base and having a total mass (aluminum plus mounting plate) of (50 ± 5) g. An angle of approximately 26° with the horizontal at the lowest point of the pendulum swing, so that only the trailing edge of the slider contacts the test surface and the slider can pivot unhindered to follow the bump.
