This European standard describes a method for determining the shear resistance of a surface using a device that remains stationary at the test site. Slip resistance is measured by means of a slide mounted at the end of a pendulum arm.

The method provides a measure of the slip resistance properties of a surface in the field or laboratory. This method measures the slip resistance of a small area (about 0,01 m2) of a surface. This should be taken into account when deciding on applicability to a surface that may have inhomogeneous surface properties, for example containing ridges or grooves or with a rough texture (exceeding 1,2 mm patch test).

Because the results of this test are taken from a small place, the results cannot be compared with those from devices such as mobile devices that measure slip resistance across a long surface.

The pendulum tester includes a spring loaded slider made of a standard rubber mounted on the end of a pendulum arm. After releasing the pendulum arm from a horizontal position, the energy loss as the slider assembly passes over the test surface is measured by the reduction in the length of the upward movement using a calibrated scale.
