This European standard is applicable to all ceramic tile adhesives for internal or external tile installations on walls and floors. This European standard does not contain performance requirements or recommendations for the design and installation of ceramic tiles.
The test method involves spreading the adhesive over a substrate with a notched trowel and placing a tile over the adhesive. The tile is then removed at the specified time intervals and the open time is determined as the maximum time interval during which the adhesive can still provide the minimum required coverage on the substrate.
The open time is determined by observing the opacity of the adhesive on the surface at certain time intervals after the tile has been removed. The minimum coverage required is typically defined as 80% of the adhesive in contact with the substrate.
The test is repeated on different substrates and under different conditions to ensure adequate performance of the adhesive in a variety of applications.
Open time is an important factor in the selection of adhesive for tile applications. Adhesives with a longer exposure time are generally preferred for larger tiles or where a longer working time is required. However, adhesives with shorter exposure times may be preferred for smaller tiles or where faster setting is desired.
It is important to note that open time is only one factor to consider when choosing an adhesive for tile applications. Other factors such as shear strength, wetting capacity and curing time must also be considered when selecting the most suitable adhesive for a particular application.
