EN 13493 Geosynthetic Barriers - Required Features for Use in the Construction of Landfills and Disposal Sites

This European Standard specifies the properties of geosynthetic barriers, including polymeric geosynthetic barriers, clay geosynthetic barriers and bitumen geosynthetic barriers, and appropriate test methods to determine them when used as liquid barriers and separation layer in the construction of landfills and disposal sites.

The intended use of these products is to control fluid leakage through the structure. This European Standard cannot be applied to geotextiles or geotextile related products as defined in EN ISO 10318-1.

This European Standard provides for the evaluation and verification of product constancy of performance (AVCP) against this European Standard, including factory production control procedures. This European Standard defines features to be considered in relation to the presentation of performance.

The main function of geosynthetic barriers used in the construction of solid waste storage and disposal sites is to prevent the movement of liquids throughout the structure and to prevent the transport of leachate of stored materials to the surrounding ground. This includes the use of a geosynthetic barrier as a basal, side, or cover liner.

All performances related to the features in this standard shall be determined when the manufacturer wishes to declare the relevant performances, unless the standard provides provisions for declaring them without testing.

Evaluations previously made in accordance with the provisions of this standard may be considered, provided that they have been made on the same product or products of similar design, construction and functionality, under the same AVCP system, using the same or more stringent test method.

For evaluation purposes, manufacturer's products may be grouped into families when the results of one or more attributes from any product in the product family are considered to represent the same attributes for all products within the same family.
