EN 13628-2 Standard Test for Determination of Residual Solvents by Flexible Packaging Material and Static Headspace Gas Chromatography

The procedure described in this section involves a single injection of the headspace, meaning an incomplete extraction of the solvent. The values ​​obtained may be lower than the absolute content, which must be determined according to section 1. During the analysis, there may be interference from possible thermal decomposition products.

Samples of the flexible packaging material are placed in a hermetically sealed bottle and heated under closely controlled conditions of time and temperature to evaporate solvents into the headspace. The amount of solvent released into the headspace is determined by transferring a portion of the headspace to a gas chromatograph for analysis.

For reproducibility, the same incubation conditions should be used for each analysis. During the analysis, there may be interference from possible thermal decomposition products. Additional peaks from these products should not be considered for the evaluation of residual solvents.
