This standard specifies a method for determining the fire resistance of horizontal service ducts and vertical service shafts running through walls or floors and surrounding pipes and cables for classification according to EN 13501-2. The test case examines the behavior of ducts and shafts exposed to fire from inside or outside the system. This standard is intended to be read in conjunction with EN 1363-1.
This standard does not examine the risk of fire propagation as a result of heat conduction along pipes or cables installed in service ducts or shafts, or by conduction through the media carried by these pipes. It does not cover the risk of damage caused by thermal elongation or shortening of tubes and cables as a result of fire or damaged pipe hangers. This standard does not provide guidance on how to test one-, two-, or three-sided service channels or shafts.
This test can be used for cabinet systems as well as systems with continuous coating with materials swelling in the cabinets. It cannot be used for systems where intumescent material is applied only within the penetration range.
This test is not suitable for evaluating service ducts or shafts with internal barriers in walls and floors. This test is not suitable for maintaining integrity in the event of fire and evaluating fire protection systems for cable systems and related components.
While the walls of service ducts or shafts tested by this method may provide certain levels of integrity or insulation, testing according to this standard does not replace functional endurance testing of small electrical cables under EN 50200.
