EN 14501 Standard Test for Shutters, Thermal and Visual Comfort, Performance Characteristics and Classification

This standard applies to all blinds, awnings and roller shutters defined in EN 12216 and defined in this document as sun protection devices. Specifies the corresponding features and classifications.

Regarding thermal comfort:

• Solar factor (total solar energy transmittance);
• Secondary heat transfer factor;
• Direct sun transmittance;
• Regarding visual comfort;
• dimming performance;
• night privacy;
• Visual contact with the outside;
• glare control;
• Daylight saving;
• Presentation of colors.

For other purposes, more elaborate methods using different parameters can be used. Some features (eg gtot) cannot be applied when the sun protection devices are not parallel to the glass (eg folding arm awnings). This standard does not apply to sun protection devices using fluorescent materials.

The characterization methods relate to the performance requirements required as a complement to the internal performances (special requirements) that internal shutters, external shutters or shutters must fulfill as specified in EN 13120, EN 13561 and EN 13659.

The current European standard is mainly based on the European study carried out in TC 89 and Technical Report CIE 130 on sun and light transmittance of glass-incorporated sun protection devices.
