For rail machines (OTMs) the requirements of this standard apply when in transport mode (self-propelled or towed). OTMs in running configuration are outside the scope of this standard.
The determination of the size, shape, orientation and position of windshields is beyond the scope of this standard. This data forms part of the windshield specification.
This standard applies to windshields made of laminated glass, the most commonly used material, as well as to other materials subject to meeting performance requirements.
This standard does not specify requirements for interfaces between the windshield and the vehicle. Accordingly, this standard does not address issues related to: installation, structural integrity, and crash-resistance.
Windshields are positioned to allow observation of the track and signals in front of a vehicle. Additional side windshields or windows may be provided next to the windshield or windshields.
The classification of rail vehicle glazing (windscreens, side windshields or body windows) affects the required properties and is mainly dependent on the orientation with respect to the road. In determining the orientation of a windshield, only those parts of the glass that, if removed, would create an opening in the vehicle's structure and expose the vehicle's occupants to the outside shall be considered. Lights, information screens or glass extending over the building for aesthetic purposes are therefore excluded.
