Three surface layer types (metal, wood veneer and pearlescent decor) are defined in this part of EN 438. EN 438-2 specifies test methods for this part of EN 438.
Because wood is a natural product, each coating can be considered unique. Slight color and structure differences are considered normal. Singularities such as knots and resin residues are considered part of the decor, not defects. There are differences in light fastness performances according to the type and source of the wood.
The back side of single-sided sheets will be suitable for bonding (eg sanded). On sanded ridges, slight squeak marks will be allowed.
Certain applications involving cut-to-size panels and full-size sheets may require special quality requirements that can be negotiated between supplier and buyer.
As color and surface quality are critical, it is recommended to check the boards for color and surface finish compatibility without a protective film prior to fabrication or installation. Some of these products are directional in surface finish or color and must be installed in the right direction.
