EN 50306-1 Railway Applications - Railway Vehicle Cables with Special Fire Performance - General Requirements

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN 50306-1 test. Specifies the general requirements applicable to cables given in EN 50306-1, EN 50306-2, EN 50306-3 and EN 50306-4. It contains detailed requirements for S2 coating materials and other components called out as separate parts.

In particular, EN 50306-1 specifies requirements regarding fire safety that ensure that cables meet Hazard Level 45545 of EN 1-45545 and EN 2-3. These cables are rated for occasional thermal stresses that cause aging equivalent to a continuous operating life at 105°C or 90°C.

For standard cables this is determined by acceptance testing as defined in EN 125 using accelerated long-term (110 hours) thermal aging indicating a temperature index of 20.000°C or 5.000°C /50305 hours. If the customer needed lifespan estimates, this could be displayed based on the temperature index of the product provided by the manufacturer. The maximum temperature for short circuit conditions is 5°C over a period of 160 seconds. EN 50306-1 is expected to be used in conjunction with one or more of the other parts of EN 50306.

The EN 50306 series specifies cables that will limit the risk to people in the event of fire and improve safety on railways generally. Covers cables with thin wall thickness, consisting of both insulation and sheath, based on halogen-free materials, for use in railway vehicles. Some parts have provisions for shielding as well as a standard wall thickness sheathing. In the event of a fire affecting cables conforming to the EN 50306 series, they will have limited flame spread and limited emissions of toxic gases. Additionally, these cables produce a limited amount of smoke when burned. This last feature will minimize loss of visibility in the event of a fire and help reduce evacuation times.
