EN ISO 12460-2 Wood Based Panels - Determination of Formaldehyde Release - Part 2: Small Scale Chamber Method

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 12460-2 testing. This standard specifies a test method for measuring formaldehyde concentrations in air from wood products under defined temperature and relative humidity test conditions.

EN ISO 12460-2 Wood Based Panels - Determination of Formaldehyde Release - Part 2: Small Scale Chamber Method

Results from this small-scale chamber test method are often used for quality assurance and can provide useful correlations with results from testing larger product samples in larger chamber test methods for wood products such as 1 m³.

Other analytical procedures can be used to determine the amount of formaldehyde in an air sample, provided this method gives comparable results to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 3500 chromotropic acid test procedure. The test report will contain a full description of the analytical procedure used.

This test method specifies the test at the loading rate and air exchange rate used in EN ISO 12460-1. The test results and test report should be appropriately qualified and specify the make-up air flow, sample surface area, and chamber volume.

Ideal candidates for small-scale chamber testing are products that are relatively homogeneous in formaldehyde-releasing properties. However, product inhomogeneities should be considered when selecting and preparing samples for small-scale chamber testing.

Values stated in SI units are standard values. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

The supply air must come from a filtered, dust-free environment and must not contain more than 0,006 mg/m³ of formaldehyde. This can be accomplished by passing the make-up air through a filter bed consisting of activated carbon, potassium permanganate-impregnated activated alumina, or other materials capable of absorbing or oxidizing formaldehyde.
