This standard covers torsion testing of machine-operated sockets only. Currently, the torsion test and hardness values given in this document ensure that sockets have a reasonable impact life if the appropriate tool is used. An impact test or durability test is desirable, but there is currently no procedure for standardization. This will be an issue for a future revision of this standard.
The nominal flatness dimension of the test mandrel must be equal to the nominal dimension (s) with tolerance h8. The mandrel shall be hardened to not less than 55 HRC hardness. A device in which the mandrel can be rotated at a specified torque with an accuracy of ± 2,5% can also be used for this test.
A square mandrel with a hardness of not less than 55 HRC should be used to drive the socket for the nominal width on flats 22 mm and less. A square mandrel with a hardness of not less than 50 HRC should be used to drive the socket for a nominal width of 24 mm and larger flats. The diagonal nominal width dimension of this mandrel will be equal to the maximum dimension of the corresponding square drive with tolerance h8.
