HAST - Highly Accelerated Stress Test

Highly accelerated stress testing (HAST) combines high temperature, high humidity, high pressure and time to measure component safety with or without electrical drift.

HAST - Highly Accelerated Stress Test

This controlled test accelerates the stresses of more traditional tests. In fact, this test functions as a corrosion failure test. Corrosion type failures are accelerated and defects in packaging gaskets, materials and joints are revealed in a very short time.

Typical HAST test conditions consist of a temperature of 110 degrees to 130 degrees and a relative humidity of 85 percent and a test period of 96 hours. After the highly accelerated stress test is complete, the tested samples are placed in moisture-proof bags with test time labels.

The HAST test is generally based on the following standards developed by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC):

  • JESD 22-A110 High-speed temperature and humidity stress test (HAST)
  • JESD 22-A118 Accelerated moisture resistance - HAST Neutral

The JESD 22-A110 standard describes a test method for evaluating the reliability of non-hermetically packaged solid-state devices in humid environments. During this test, severe temperature, humidity, and bias conditions are simulated that accelerate the penetration of moisture through the outer shielding material (encapsulator or gasket) or along the interface between the outer shielding material and metallic conductors passing through it.

The JESD 22-A118 standard describes a test method for evaluating the reliability of non-hermetically packaged solid-state devices in humid environments. This test method is a highly accelerated test that uses temperature and humidity under non-condensable conditions to accelerate the penetration of moisture through the external shielding material (encapsulator or gasket) or across the interface between the external shielding material and metallic conductors passing through it. No bias is applied in this test to allow revealing of failure mechanisms potentially eclipsed by the bias, such as galvanic corrosion. This test is used to identify failure mechanisms within the package and is a destructive test method.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides HAST - Highly accelerated stress testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
