IEC 60590 Standard Test for Determination of Aromatic Hydrocarbon Content of New Mineral Insulating Oils

Infrared spectrophotometric analysis; this method is recommended as a quality control and acceptance test for mineral insulating oils. It uses the relationship between absorbance at 1 610 cm-1 and ndM analysis to determine the proportion of total carbon atoms present in aromatic ring structures. The conversion factor derived from this relationship is applicable to oils with a molecular mass in the range of 290 to 500 and an aromatic carbon content in the range of 1.2% to 60%.

Adsorption chromatographic analysis; this method describes measuring the percentage by mass of polar compounds and compounds containing at least one aromatic ring per molecule found in low molecular mass mineral insulating oils.

The analyzes show that several transitions in the chemistry of petroleum compounds contribute to the observed compound peaks and do not allow the identification of specific compounds beyond their functional groups.

While the primary and secondary proton ratios of aged oils are determined as approximately 1, the ratio varies between 1.120 and 1.194 in new oils.
