IMO Rule MSC.61(67) Adoption of International Rules for the Application of Fire Test Procedures

IMO rule MSC.61(67), published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), regulates the principles for the approval of the installation of products on ships flying the flag of the flag state in accordance with the fire safety requirements of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

IMO Rule MSC.61(67) Adoption of International Rules for the Application of Fire Test Procedures

The international regulation for the application of fire test procedures mainly covers the following test procedures:

  • Part 1: Flammability test. This test is applied when a material is desired to be non-flammable. If a material passes the test specified in section 2, it is considered non-combustible even if it consists of a mixture of inorganic and organic materials.
  • Part 2: Smoke and toxicity testing. This test is applied when a material is required not to produce excessive amounts of smoke and toxic products or to cause toxic hazards at high temperatures.
  • Part 3: Test for class A, B and F divisions. This test is applied where products such as decks, curtains, doors, ceilings, cladding, windows, fire dampers, pipe penetrations and cable transits are required to be class A, B or F partitions.
  • Part 4: Thermal radiation testing among fire resistance tests for windows in class A, B and F divisions. This test is applied to measure the flux flow through windows as a basis for characterizing their ability to limit heat radiation to prevent the spread of fire and to allow escape routes to pass near windows. This test is an optional requirement.
  • Part 5: Fire test for surface flammability. This test is applied when a product is desired to have a surface with low flame spread.
  • Part 6: Fire testing for primary deck linings. This test is applied where the primary deck linings should not be easily flammable.
  • Part 7: Fire testing for vertically supported textiles and films.
  • Part 8: Fire test for upholstered furniture.
  • Part 9: Fire test for bearing components.

Some products or components need to be tested according to more than one test procedure.
